Views like this can only be seen in postcards. Not.

Rievaulx Temples and Terrace gardens have a spectacular view of the Rievaulx Abbey. The Abbey, now mostly in ruins, is tucked away in a valley in the northwest of England. Sitting just above it, the gardens were built by a very wealthy Brit. It was fashionable in those days to flaunt your wealth, and build these gorgeous garden settings. As you walk along the edge of the gardens the views of the abbey appear as rays of sunshine, peaking through, so purposefully built.

We did not get close and personal with the Abbey, as it is managed by the English Heritage, but we did enjoy the gardens. The building with the pillars was a very formal place to dine, with the garden's caretaker living below.
